Microsoft Access 2007 Review

GCN recently published a review of Microsoft Access 2007, by Carlos A. Soto, that I thought was very helpful. His summary was that Access 2007 provides great versatility and compatibility with other Microsoft suites, but can be difficult to master. With robust and intuitive database templates, Access 2007 has become very accessible (outside of complex schemas or advanced features). Microsoft has answered the criticism on it’s lack of templates by providing access to dozens, ranging from an asset database to track resources to templates for faculty, students, and marketing-related project resource tracking. While the templates are ready to use as-is, they can also be modified and re-created as needed. Access 2007, like the rest of the Microsoft Office 2007 Suite, utilizes the ribbon interface, and like Excel, you can enter data into an Access cell before formatting, add columns to tables and edit them without using Design view. In addition, a new feature called Automatic Data Type Detection, makes it easy to create schemas and tables. You can now paste Excel spreadsheets into an Access table, run pivot tables and chart views, and basically eliminate the need to export data to Excel. Carlos goes on to list a handful of other new features found in Access 2007, and concludes that, “Access was by far the easiest and most robust database in the review for uploading, expanding and analyzing my test data.” Subscribe to the Keystone OnDemand blog to be the first to learn about future Microsoft Access 2010 Training and Access 2007 training, news and special subscriber offers.

Windows vista to Windows 7 Migration

If you are currently running Vista and planning to upgrade to Windows 7, there is good news. Microsoft has designed the transition to be smooth and effortless. When you boot the Windows 7 Disk, you will have an option to perform an in-place upgrade from the booted disk. An hour or so later… you are in business. If you go with a clean install on a new computer, you can also use Windows Easy Transfer to transfer your existing settings and documents from your old computer to the new one. History

The idea of having a Tamil University on the lines of Hebrew University of Israel in the Eastern Province was mooted in 1960 by a group of professors who were teaching at the University of Ceylon. The project was started by purchasing land near Nilaveli, Trincomalee and was abandoned later due to lack of funds. The present project was started by K.W. Devanayakam, the Home Minister of the UNP government with the collaboration of Prof FRSCP Kalpage, Minister of Higher Education during 1981. This university is located in a sandy area and it is not very fertile like the non-calcic brown soils found elsewhere in Batticaloa.

The Eastern University is situated in an area where relative peace is maintained by the warring parties in the Sri Lankan conflict. The UNP government turned the Vantharumoolai High School into a regional university with a view to make it cater to the needs of the local students. The primary instruction was in Tamil and English.

It has a very highly qualified teaching staff, trained abroad in several western countries. It catered for the farming population of the Eastern Province. Eastern Province is the breadbasket of Sri Lanka, producing a record rice production in the Ampara district and is a model for the rest of Sri Lanka and Asia.

The Eastern University has three faculties, namely the Arts Faculty, the Science Faculty, and the Agriculture Faculty. The main campus is situated in Vantharumoolai, near the town of Chenkalady. The campus has another premises in Trincomalee known as "Trincomalee premises of EUSL".

The present civil war in Sri Lanka has affected the growth and development of the university and the funds from the Central Government is very limited and meagre in comparison with other similar universities.

Batticaloa

Batticaloa is in the eastern cost of Sri Lanka on a flat coastal plain boarded by the Indian Ocean in the east occupies the central part of the eastern Sri Lanka. Its average elevation is around 5 meters [1].The city has the beauty of the spit of land masses separated from the mainland by the brackish lagoon and small islands lies in the midst of the lagoon which traverses through the district extending 73.5 km. to Verugal in the North from Batticaloa city and also extending from the city 35.2 km. from the South up to Thuraineelavanai.

Many bridges are built across the lagoon connecting the landmasses and the islands. The largest island is called Pullianthivu which the metropolitan place of the city. The bridge of all is Lady Manning bridge located at Kallady, which is the main access path to the city from the southern places of the district. This bridge is also famous for Singing fishes which was considered musical sounds heard in the Kallady lagoon in the full moon day. A priest named Father Lang recorded this musical charm and broadcast it in the 1960s over the SLBC (Sri Lanka Broadcasting Cooperation)

Swine influenza

Swine influenza (also called swine flu, hog flu, and pig flu) is an infection of a host animal by any one of several specific types of microscopic organisms called "swine influenza virus". A swine influenza virus (SIV) is any strain of the influenza family of viruses that is usually hosted by (is endemic in) pigs.[2] As of 2009, the known SIV strains are the influenza C virus and the subtypes of the influenza A virus known as H1N1, H1N2, H3N1, H3N2, and H2N3. Swine influenza is common in pigs in the midwestern United States (and occasionally in other states), Mexico, Canada, South America, Europe (including the United Kingdom, Sweden, and Italy), Kenya, Mainland China, Taiwan, Japan and other parts of eastern Asia.[2]

Transmission of swine influenza virus from pigs to humans is not common and does not always cause human influenza, often only resulting in the production of antibodies in the blood. The meat of the animal poses no risk of transmitting the virus when properly cooked. If transmission does cause human influenza, it is called zoonotic swine flu. People who work with pigs, especially people with intense exposures, are at increased risk of catching swine flu. In the mid-20th century, identification of influenza subtypes became possible, this allows accurate diagnosis of transmission to humans. Since then, fifty confirmed transmissions have been recorded, Rarely, these strains of swine flu can pass from human to human. In humans, the symptoms of swine flu are similar to those of influenza and of influenza-like illness in general, namely chills, fever, sore throat, muscle pains, severe headache, coughing, weakness and general discomfort.

The 2009 flu outbreak in humans, known as "swine flu", is due to a new strain of influenza A virus subtype H1N1 that contains genes closely related to swine influenza.[3] The origin of this new strain is unknown. However, the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) reports that this strain has not been isolated in pigs.[4] This strain can be transmitted from human to human,[5] and causes the normal symptoms of influenza.[6]

Pigs can become infected with human influenza, and this appears to have happened during the 1918 flu pandemic and the 2009 flu outbreak.
